OUR
HISTORY Our church was founded in the Spring of 1816 when twenty five believers gathered
to officially establish the First Baptist Church (Society). They began to hold regular worship in Lynn at the old
First Congregational Church...... Our present church building was completed in 1867 and we have worshiped here ever since.
During this period we have seen our numbers rise and fall. In the nineties God led us to a new ministry, share
our church facilities. At present God is using us to provide a place of worship for a Spanish, Haitian(French),
Brazilian(Portuguese) and Karen speaking congregations.
We invite you
to become a part of the church today and be a part of God's history for tomorrow.
AMERICAN BAPTIST HISTORY American
Baptist trace their roots back to the early 17th century in England, Holland and America. In America Baptists established
churches in Providence, R.I. and in the Philadelphia area. A number of revivals in the eighteenth century and the evolvement
of a national belief that their should be "NO STATE SPONSORED RELIGION" ( No state sponsored religion does not mean
we remove God from our society and government as represented by some individuals today.) These revivals enabled Baptist
to grow in numbers especially in New England and the Southern Colonies. In 1814 the first Baptist national organization
was formed to help support a missionary couple - Adoniram and Ann Judson - who were the first missionaries to leave
America for Burma. Today that organization is part of ABC-USA and is called the American Baptist Board of International
Ministries. American Baptist history does not stop there. In 1824 the American Baptist Publication Society was
founded and in 1832 the American Baptist Home Mission Society was founded. It was determined that these ministries could
be carried on more efficiently if the churches combined their resources.
In 1845 Baptist in America split
over the slavery issue. As a result the Southern Baptist formed the Southern Baptist Convention. While the Northern
Baptist remained as a group of societies until 1907. At which time they were known as the Northern Baptist Convention and
renamed in1950 as the American Baptist Convention. In 1972 the name was changed to American Baptist Churches USA (ABC-USA).
ABC-USA numbers 5,700 congregations with about 1.5 million members. We rank sixth in size among Baptist Organizations.
